“A lot of women reported that they’d gone to a guy’s house for a ‘Mafia Gangster Game’
gatherings where you play Mafia together,” Chhetri explained. “Another
thing is that, at Mafia tournaments, people often share hotel rooms.
You’ll cram, like, 10 people to a room. . . Sometimes predators will
take that opportunity-...to assault a girl. . . Mafia fests and Mafia
hotels are the two places women can be at risk.”
Chhetri
emphasizes that statistics of alleged sexual misconduct in her
Mafia-centric report don’t vary significantly from national statistics.
“The one-in-four stat for Mafia players reflects the national trend,”
she explained. However, Chhetri points out two social mainstays of the
Mafia community that, she noticed, are common among narratives of
assault within the community: Mafia fests and Mafia hotels.
In
the days since Chhetri’s guide, the Mafia community is still struggling
to digest its relevance. When is a gaming community just about a game,
and when is it about the people who play it and their wellbeing?
“The
Mafia community is called a community because there are people in it,”
Chhetri explained to me over the phone. “Otherwise, it’d just be called
Mafia.”
The Japanese Mafia Wants You To Learn English
Mafia
City takes players to the belly of the beast, giving them a chance to
view the underworld up close and personal. But more than hostesses and
mahjong was cut from the game, including an English speaking class.
The English conversational industry
is, New Mafia Game,
according to Tokyo Vice writer Jake Adelstein, "one of the industries
that the yakuza dominate in Japan". He is quick to point out that most
English schools in Japan are totally legit and the teachers are decent
folks.
