Designer Alexander Wang has been at the forefront of the silhouette mixing phenomenon. For his Spring Summer 2018 outing, he sent out many looks where slips were fused with sweatshirt jumpers and denims were mixed with metallic studs. Balenciaga’s street cred was reaffirmed as the label fused a trench coat with a denim jacket. Celine, on the other hand, combined a pantsuit jacket with top coat like a potent cocktail and Helmut Lang layered jackets with bralettes. One of Sacai’s looks featured a dress which was a collage of contrasting textures and prints. Is it 90s combing back or street style making its dominance loud and clear in the rarefied high fashion space? We speak to the style arbiters.

More DIY

Shift designer Nimish Shah sees it as a DIY trend which is more home-made in its treatment and a lot edgier, a far cry from the minimalist 90s. However, he doesn’t see the trend making any impact in India. “We are not avant-garde dressers. We are far more traditional,” he says.

Done with ruffles

Arpita Mehta observes that the jaded fashion set is done with the sheer and ruffles trend. “It’s an exciting time. As we are stepping into summer, one sees this change which is rather welcoming. I’d love to incorporate hybrid pieces in my closet keeping our weather in mind,” she says.

Not for everyone

Designer Surily Goel sees it as a style statement for sure but very street. “You need to have an amazing body and height. It’s not for everyone. Maybe a Kangana Ranaut or an Ujjwala Raut can get away with it.
