Happy Monday, Everyone! This week I’m here to share with you the common taboo about wearing white after Labor Day. The post-Labor Day explanation may be due to one of two things: practicality or shifts in weather. For centuries, wearing white in warmer months was just another way to stay cool, considering there was no air conditioning, halter tops, or short shorts. Instead, people relied on wearing white, because of the lighter material. The shifts in weather comes from the hub of the fashion industry, where most were located in big, cool, northern cities, that experienced a climate change. Therefore, instead of running the risk of destroying a pair of white pants, while out gallivanting the streets of NY, they opted for warmer tones, which inevitably, our country then followed suit.

As valid as this argument may sound, when is there ever a true practical reason for a fashion rule? Have you seen the fabricated looks that dominate the runways??! My point exactly…

Below are five simple looks (for both men and women) that you can easily master to help transition some of those favorite white pieces you thought you had to tuck away until spring’s first bloom.

PANTS:

Pants are by far the easiest route to go when trying to stay polished and fresh during the cooler months, and definitely my favorite way to wear the color (or lack-there-of). Ladies, pair it with a cute blouse, fitted top, or try a nice streamlined fitted pants with an oversized, chunky sweater or a blazer, and embellish with your favorite accessories. Guys, just like the ladies, try a nice streamlined look with a nice fitted sweater (Button-Down, Collared, or a V-Neck is always suitable) for a day at work, or a night out on the town!

BLAZER/JACKET:

There is nothing that looks better on a man or a woman, than when seeing one in a structured blazer or jacket. In order to keep the look flawless for work, choose a form fitting, dark-colored shirt, fitted pants, pumps, booties and a nice statement necklace for you ladies, and a nice pair of jeans, dress shoes or sneakers (have you seen the New Balance line that J. Crew sells?) for the guys. Not in the mood for pants, ladies? Okay then, switch out the top and pants for a flattering shift-dress that will not only keep you looking professional, but will keep you comfortable, too! To switch up this look for a casual day or night out, I love throwing on a vintage t-shirt, some slender jeans, and a pair of pumps to look chic, yet not too over the top.

SWEATER:

Two words: Sweater Weather. There is nothing that makes fall sound cozier than a soft, oversized cardigan, or a chunky knit to help dress up the leggings that us ladies know deep down we are dying to wear, but know that it’s a fashion faux pas to wear with form-fitting tops that barely cover our derriere! The white sweater makes the perfect addition to your fall and winter wardrobe, because it’s an excuse to be comfortable, while getting away with it, because you still look “put together.”

ACCESSORIES:

A girl’s best friend (when you’re coffee is having a moment)…and an easy way to incorporate this modern look into your wardrobe, especially if you do not own any of the above pieces. The best part about it is, you can easily find so many unique white accessories that suit your style on any particular day. Whether it’s jewels, a coat, your new handbag, scarves, hats, or boots, they all add an edgy, bold look to any outfit without overdramatizing the effect. Guys, I’m not leaving you out: scarves, watches and shoulder bags can also work to help you complete your look!

BLOUSE/BUTTON DOWN SHIRT:

If you’re still a little weary about the whole idea, why not start small? Make sure to contrast it with darker neutrals on the bottom half, or your favorite form-fitting jeans, with heels, or booties for the ladies, and some casual dress shoes for the men. Colorful accessories can also help accentuate the look. This is one article of clothing you will never regret having, hanging from the clothing rack in your closet!
