Error Description: QuickBooks error 6000, 82 occurs when you attempt to open a company file. The error message displayed is: “An error appeared when QuickBooks examined to open the company file.”


The error shows that QuickBooks cannot locate the company file, which is stored in a different computer in the network. This error mostly occurs when you are using QuickBooks in a multi-user mode.


Solution: In order to fix QuickBooks error 6000, 82, we have provided more than one solution. Maybe the first solution will solve the issue of QuickBooks, or you may need to examine both the solutions in order to fix this error.


SOLUTION 1: This is the first method that you can follow to fix the error in QuickBooks.


  1. Make sure that your QuickBooks is up-to-date.

  2. Terminate the accounts of QuickBooks Online from all devices, including smartphone and tablet.

  3. Rename the company file by right-clicking on the file name and selecting the Rename option.

  4. Select the company file by highlighting it and press the F2 key. Now, separate the spaces from the point between the company file name and the extension of the company file name.

  5. Launch QuickBooks Online from your internet browser (Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox or Safari) and try to open the company file.

SOLUTION 2: This is the second method that you can follow to fix the error in QuickBooks.


  1. Turn off the Hosting multi-user path option. Within QuickBooks Online go to the File menu, select Utilities and click on the Stop hosting multi-user path option. Turning off the Hosting feature will disable the multi-user services.

  2. A confirmation message will appear on your screen. Click the Yes button.

  3. Launch QuickBooks Online from your internet browser (Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox or Safari) and try to open the company file.
